India-bound Ford Fiesta SUV Spied in Europe

Honda to Introduce Small Diesel Engine Car by 2012

Currently, Honda sells only petrol cars in India. Now, the Japanese company has announced that it will bring a below-2 litre capacity diesel engine by 2012. And once it gets launched in Europe, it will be introduced in the Indian market too.

A senior HSCI official said, “The small diesel engine will be ready for European models by 2012. We're thinking of bringing this to India after that, though with modifications. It is likely to be used in cars below the Accord and CR-V, like the City, Jazz and the new small car.”

Currently Honda has only one diesel engine in the global market, a 2.2 litre powerplant that is used in Accord and CR-V. Of late Honda has been facing severe competition across various markets because of the absence of diesel cars in its portfolio.

The company official also revealed that car manufacturing at the company’s second plant in Tapukara, Rajasthan, has been pushed back to after the small car launch. Currently, the plant utilises only 60,000 unit capacity of the one lakh total capacity of the Greater Noida plant. However, the Tapukara plant is manufacturing some engine components that are being exported.

“We had earlier planned to open the Tapukara plant at the end of 2009, so the basic building structure is already there. However, now we'll only start making cars at Tapukara when the capacity at Greater Noida is exhausted. Right now, we're using only 60 per cent of our capacity there,” said the official during the SIAM annual conference.

Force Motors to Enter Passenger Car Segment with an SUV

Force Motors also makes engines for Mercedes Benz’s passenger car range in India. Force Motors has not released any details of the SUV yet.

Force Motors said the company did not see any reason behind upgrading the Minidor to meet the BS IV norms and hence discontinued it. However, Firodia added that the company may consider re-entering the segment with an all new vehicle later.

Internal Risks a Bigger Challenge - Maruti Suzuki India

"The company has to watch out for signs of complacence, self satisfaction and sluggishness," the company said in its annual report for 2009-10.

Maruti already has a well defined roadmap, such as products, total cost of ownership, sales and service network and systems and processes for customer delight, for enhancing its position in the market.

"They all augur well for the future, but risks to the organisations at such level are more internal than external," it said.

Since MSI is the market leader in India, it does not have the "luxury of a visible and defined benchmark or competitor, as it would be available to the other players." The only benchmark that the company can lean on is sharper understanding and anticipation of the stated and unstated need of the customer, MSI said.

"The company therefore has to keep attacking itself, keep challenging its own levels of past achievement, keep setting high benchmarks for improvement...," it added.

After facing some stiff competition from rivals like Hyundai Motor India, Tata Motors, General Motors India and Ford India, MSI has realised the need for self improvement. For the first time in its history, MSI experienced a dip in its market share in India when it fell below 50 per cent this fiscal.

Rumours are rife that Red Bull is likely to close a deal to be equipped with Mercedes engines for the 2011 season. A German newspaper has reported that the move would also involve the currently Mercedes-powered Force India team switching to Red Bull's current engine supplier Renault.

Red Bull has been trying to lay its hands on the Mercedes engines for quite some time now, or minimally an allowance amid the engine development 'freeze' to bring the underpowered Renault V8 up to speed.

The report also says that Mercedes may consider to ending its relationship with Force India due to the Silverstone based team missing scheduled payments. And, what with other controversies shrouding the reputation of the Force India team.

The report hints that F1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone is highly involved in the negotiations, as McLaren remains in a position to sanction Mercedes' alliances with customer teams.

The 2010 Formula One Championship leader Mark Webber said on Thursday that the weakness of Red Bull's otherwise dominant RB6 is its engine power.

"We know that running on long straights is not a strength of the car and hasn't been for quite a few years and we know why," said the Australian.

"We can still keep up at these tracks, but I think if we had to have 17 races in a championship, we wouldn't choose Spa and Monza to have races at," added Webber.

Renault to Take the Indian Market by Storm with Launch of Five New Cars

After the break up with Mahindra & Mahindra, French car maker Renault wants to start a new innings in the Indian car market.  And for that the car maker is developing a car which will be designed to meet the specific needs of the Indian market and is expected to be introduced after 2013.

"At present, we are at the conceptualisation stage for a car which would meet the requirements of the Indian market," Renault India Chief Executive Officer Sudhir Rao told during the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) summit here.

He, however, refrained from giving details on the segment the car will fit in saying, "It is too premature to say anything right now, but we are very flexible on that."

The car will also be exported to other markets similar to India. "We have a global approach. While the conceptualisation and development will be done in India, we and the car will also be exported to markets similar to India," Rao said.

The company is planning to introduce at least five cars in the country during the 2011-2013 period. And yes, there would be a small car too. The company is likely to share the platform with its Japanese partner Nissan to launch the small car in 2012.

"We have decided to introduce five cars in the two-year period between mid 2011 to mid 2013. It will start with our sedan--Fluence, by next year," Renault India Country General Manager Marc Nassif said.

After the Fluence, the company will introduce its SUV Koleos in the same year. 

When asked about the company’s all car for the Indian market, he said, "We will introduce the hatchback in the most competitive B segment and it will be rolled out in 2012...We may share a Nissan platform for launching the small car."

Carmakers Shift Attention to Design, Lifestyle Features & Marketing

As the average age of car buyers in the country goes down, car manufacturers are shifting their focus on design, lifestyle features and appealing marketing strategies. The average age of car buyers have come down from 39 to 32 over the past ten years or so with earning members in the age group of 25-30 become the car buyers in the market.

This change in trend has changed the colour and flavour on Indian roads where trendy hatchbacks and high-performance sports utility vehicles is ruling the roads.

“We are now dealing with younger customers who are not just hugely demanding but also frequently changing cars,” says Mayank Pareek, executive director (marketing & sales) at Maruti Suzuki. “This post-liberalisation generation is willing to spend on new products and willing to experiment a lot,” he adds. Maruti has seen sales of its models such as Swift and A-Star speeding on the back of sporty design and powerful performance.

Supported by the buying behavior of the Indian youth, the Indian auto market has grown at the rate double-digits for the past many months. The market has grown at 37% year-on-year to 2.22 lakh units in July. Aggressive design and style of cars like Maruti Swift, Hyundai i20 and Honda City has helped the sales of these cars.
